Charles Koch and David Koch were born in Wichita, Kansas. There were two of four sons of Clementine Mary and Fred C Koch. Fred is of Dutch descent as his father, Harry Koch, migrated to West Texas. Though these brothers were born into a wealthy family, they did not live a privileged life.

Koch brothers attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in general engineering in 1957. Charles Koch earned a Master of Science degree in nuclear engineering and another master's degree in chemical engineering. He started working on an oil refinery after college.

Koch joined Rock Island Oil Refining Company which was founded by his father Fred C Koch in 1940. After his father died in 1967, Charles became the chairman of the company and renamed it Koch Industries in 1968. His twin brothers, David and Bill, joined the family business later in 1970 and 1971.

Koch brothers expanded the business to a variety of branches like pulp and paper manufacturing, mineral mining, plastic production, natural gas production, petroleum production, chemical production, finance, and market structure, etc. With the success of these two brothers, the company grew tremendously.
