Robert Smith was born on 1 December 1962 in Denver, Colorado. He is the son of Dr. William Robert Smith and Dr. Sylvia Myrna Smith. Both of his parents were school teachers. He is of African descent and grew up in a middle-class family.
Robert Smith attended Carson Elementary School and East High School and Denver for basic education. He got an internship position at Bell Labs after five months of persistence. He then attended Cornell University and graduated from there in chemical engineering in 1985. He also attended Columbia University to have his Master of Business Administration degree in 1994.
Professional Life
At the beginning of his career, Smith worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Kraft General Foods as a chemical engineer. He got four patents while working there. He also worked for Goldman Sachs from 1994 to 2000.
Then he founded Vista Equity Partners, private equity and venture capital firm in 2000. He worked as the chairman and CEO of the firm. In 2019, his firm was the fourth largest enterprise software company. He became the founding director and president of Fund II Foundation in 2014. Smith received an honorary doctorate from Huston-Tillotson University in 2014.
