Russell Crowe was born on 7 April 1964 in the Wellington suburb of Strathmore Park, New Zealand. He is the son of Jocelyn Yvonne and John Alexander Crowe. Both of his parents were film set caterers. His father, John, also managed a hotel. Russell probably got the inspiration for acting from his parent’s career.

When Russell was four years old, the family shifted to Sydney, Australia. He appeared on screen for the first time in one episode of the Australian TV series Spyforce when he was only five or six years old. He attended Vaucluse Public School and Sydney Boys High School in Australia. After his family moved back to New Zealand, he attended Auckland Grammar School and Mount Roskill Grammar School.

Russell Crowe started his first professional theatre job in 1986. In 1988, he played Mickey in Australian production. He appeared on four episodes of Neighbours, a popular Australian soap opera in 1987. He was cast in his first film, The Crossing, in 1990.
